Julien Laforge and the students in the 2nd year of the CAP Carpentery Manufacturer

Les gestes vernaculaires : the sculling work

May 5
June 30, 2022

From September to April 2022, the artist Julien Laforge led a residence of research, creation and transmission with the students of CAP2 Carpentery Manufacturer.

About

Based on their discovery and observation of the Dol marshes, the students took motifs from the landscape. They enriched this formal repertoire with drawings and sketches based on segments of shipbuilding and hydraulic architecture. For the duration of the project, the artist and the students tried to break away from standardised formats and manufacturing techniques, to return to vernacular gestures and 'hand' woodworking.
The exhibition features a mix of individual and collective creations. Working alone or in small groups, the students have created a dozen sculptures assembled by the artist, like links in a chain or a network of hydraulic architecture. The ensemble is housed in a box covered with bas-reliefs depicting fragments of marsh landscapes.
